An antique Khmer style bronze Vishnu sculpture.
Vishnu is both world protector and preserver, restorer of moral order - he is all-powerful and all-pervasive by nature.
This compelling Vishnu image characterises Koh Ker style. As is typical with this style the Vishnu has a soft face with minimum decoration. His tiara or mukuta is richly decorated. A tradition that continued to develop in Cambodia from the 10th century to the post-Angkor period.
The hair is twisted and arranged in horizontal rows to form a jatamukuta marked with concentric circles of hair on top. His face is shown with rimmed lips, a beard and moustache.
Three indented beauty lines mark his neck.
The image is mounted on a wood base.
