Antique Khmer Style Bronze Khmer Angkor Wat Vishnu Statue Riding Garuda - 19.5cm/8"
Measures (Height) 19.5cm/8"
An antique Khmer-style masterpiece: a bronze Vishnu riding Garuda in 12th‑century Angkor Wat style. Vishnu, divine preserver and protector, is shown in majestic union with his mount, Garuda, creating a powerful image of guardianship, strength, and cosmic order.
Solid cast and superbly modelled, the craftsmanship and quality of this unique piece are immediately evident. Vishnu’s iconic downcast gaze and serene features embody authority tempered by compassion. In keeping with the Angkor Wat style, the overall silhouette is strong and slightly heavy, yet remains elegant and poised. The fine detailing of the faces and hands is exceptionally crisp, suggesting prana—the inner breath of life that conveys superhuman power. Soft, full forms accentuate the wide‑open eyes, sensuous lips, and carefully observed anatomy.
The ornate carving of the diadem contrasts beautifully with the smoother facial surfaces, while the inner rims of the ears display the characteristic tripart scalloped treatment of Khmer sculpture. Slightly arched brows, full rimmed lips, wide open eyes, and a broad, gently flattened nose give the face its distinctive Khmer character. Vishnu is rendered in realistic human form, standing in a strong frontal posture designed to be admired in the round.
The deity’s body is finely proportioned, with slender waist and broad hips and shoulders. He wears a vertically striated sampot, rising high at the back and sweeping down steeply at the front to just below the navel, bound by a plain belt. The cloth is drawn between the legs and wrapped around the belt at the back, the pleated ends forming a graceful “butterfly wing” motif. The folds are of extreme finesse, underscoring the sculpture’s status as a work of great artistry. In his hands Vishnu holds his conch shell, emblem of the primordial sound and cosmic order, and in his lower left hand a gada or mace, symbolising his mental and physical strength.
The ornamentation reflects perfect mastery and fluidity, with facial features that retain echoes of the earlier Banteay Srei style but in a more delicate, refined manner. Although statues of this period are often modest in size, they emanate a pronounced sense of elegance and softness, which this piece exemplifies.
Garuda, the mighty bird‑like vahana of Vishnu, is equally rich in symbolism. Revered in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions for his power, speed, and protective role, Garuda represents courage, strength, and the triumph of good over evil. Myth recounts his heroic quest for the nectar of immortality (amrita) to free his mother from bondage, and with a touch of poetic licence tells that each beat of his vast wings stirs hurricane winds that darken the sky and topple houses. Across Southeast Asia—including Thailand and Indonesia—Garuda has become both a national and cultural emblem, embodying sovereignty and spiritual protection.
The malachite and azurite patina is particularly appealing, lending beautiful colour variation, depth, and a strong sense of age to the bronze surface. Traditional in appearance yet visually striking, this Vishnu‑on‑Garuda masterpiece will bring an atmosphere of protection, nobility, and timeless sacred style to any home, office, or dedicated meditation or ritual space.

It is an amazing "museum quality" antique bronze!!! For a 19th century bronze antique, I believe the Newark, NJ Museum may express interest if I show them. However, they will never get it and I will have it in my collection for posterity. We will be doing much more business in the foreseeable future, count on it!!!

Thank you so very much! Well, I needed Buddha here -- and I certainly now have Buddha here in many ways and many forms -- with thanks to HDAsianArt. Each statue you've sent has worked out very well -- each in its own way -- each combined in settings with other art pieces -- each has blended well -- finishing off different areas of my home -- and all communicates well to tell a story of different aspects of my life. I intentionally chose your pieces -- to get away from the "norm" of beautiful gild Buddhas that everyone has -- your pieces are quite unique -- and a bit more "real" -- which serves my purpose well. So, thank you.
