Antique Baphuon Style Stone Lakshmi / Devi Consort of Vishnu Torso - 57cm/23"
Measures (Height) 57cm/23"
A delightful antique Baphuon style Lakshmi, devi or Goddess torso from Cambodia. The hand-carved Khmer Sandstone Deity figure, of Lakshmi, is stylistically and iconographically executed in traditional 'Baphuon' style, from Khmer mythology.
The figure is presented as found, elegantly modelled from a solid block of sandstone. As with images from this period, the ornamentation reflects a perfect mastery of sculpting and fluidity. The features of the statue retain characteristics of the previous Banteay Srei style, but appear more delicate.
The deity is masterfully modelled in realistic human form, standing in a strong frontal posture mounted on a wood and metal base. As is traditional, Lakshmi wears a long stylized sampot worn high on the hips, secured by a plain belt.
Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of wealth, prosperity (both material and spiritual), light, wisdom, fortune, fertility, generosity and courage.
The embodiment of beauty, grace and charm. Also called Mahalakshmi, she is said to bring good luck, and is believed to protect her devotees from all kinds of misery and money-related sorrows.
The patina and details of this piece are particularly appealing.
The torso has been loose mounted on a wood and metal plinth (later).
To aid with safe shipping your Torso will be wood crated before shipping. There is no additional cost for this packing, crating and shipping service.
This traditional in appearance piece is sure to add a unique touch to any room of your home or workplace. One of the most recognizable of the Asian deities this representation of the consort of Vishnu is sure to enlighten your home with endlessly timeless style.
