An antique Khmer‑style seated wood Ganesha from Cambodia, carved with a gently rounded body and poised in a relaxed, cross‑legged posture. The figure is finished in a rich blue tone with golden highlights that pick out the crown, jewellery and edges of the garments, giving the piece a warm, luminous presence despite its compact size.
Ganesha, the elephant‑headed son of Shiva, is shown holding his broken tusk in one hand, along with a chakra (discus) and conch shell—attributes more commonly associated with Vishnu, here emphasising Ganesha’s role as a celebrant of life’s pleasures and beauty and a guardian of cosmic order. He also holds laddus, Indian sweetmeats that symbolise the rewards of a wisely led life and the enduring sweetness of fulfilled experience. Although he is never depicted actually eating them, the sweets hint at his understanding of everyday human desires and his closeness to those he protects.
The direction of Ganesha’s trunk carries particular significance: here it curves to his left, a form traditionally associated with grihastas, or householders, and linked to the Ida/Chandra nadi, the cool lunar channel. This left‑curving trunk is considered especially auspicious for the home, representing peace, prosperity, emotional nourishment and success in worldly affairs. In this depiction Ganesha also holds the remnants of his broken tusk, referencing stories in which he sacrifices the tusk either in devotion to Shiva or as a makeshift pen to continue writing the Mahabharata without pause. Symbolically, the single tusk expresses non‑duality and the priority of inner wisdom over outer perfection, inviting us to transcend the apparent split between body and spirit.
In his early Indian forms Ganesha was strongly associated with fertility, and over time he became widely revered as the Remover of Obstacles, Lord of Beginnings and patron of arts, sciences, intellect and wisdom. One of the most recognisable of Asian deities, this Khmer‑style wooden Ganesha brings those layered meanings into a contemporary interior, offering a piece that is both charming and deeply symbolic.
