Antique Indonesian Style Bronze Javanese Teaching Buddha - 25cm/10"
Measures (Height) 25cm/10"
An Indonesian (Java) Teaching Buddha in 13th century Majapahit style. The Buddha is stood samabhanga on a round base which it itself loose mounted to a wood pedestal.
His robe is draped over his left shoulder, and a portion of the garment that covers the left wrist falls behind the figure. The lower hem of the robe comes all the way down so that the under-cloth or skirt is completely covered.
He holds the hem of his robe in his left hand.
His right hand is held in front of his chest in the dharmachakra mudra. In sanskrit dharmachakra means the 'Wheel of Dharma'. This mudra symbolises one of the most important moments in the life of Buddha, the occasion when he preached to his companions the first sermon after his Enlightenment in the Deer Park at Sarnath. It therefore denotes the setting into motion of the Wheel of the teaching of the Dharma. In this mudra the thumb and index finger touch at their tips to form a circle. This circle represents the Wheel of Dharma, or in metaphysical terms, the union of method and wisdom. This symbolises generosity.
The Buddha has a softly contoured face with indigenous characteristics has a serene downcast expression, with heavy-lidded eyes, arched eyebrows carved in relief meet in the middle above a well-shaped broad nose, and wide lips with a serene smile.
His head is surmounted by tight curls that raises to a point. This raised ushnisha symbolises his high level of spiritual development. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings.
He also has a third eye or urna on his forehead symbolizing the ability of Buddha to see past our mundane universe of suffering.
