An antique Thai‑style standing Buddha from HD Asian Art, depicting the Blessed One after his enlightenment in the refined idiom of the Sukhothai tradition.
Graceful and poised, the Buddha stands upon a stylised lotus base that rises in stepped tiers, the uppermost carved as a ring of closed lotus buds. The lotus, growing unsullied from muddy water, symbolises purity, spiritual awakening and the blossoming of wisdom—an especially fitting foundation for this protective image.
The figure is shown in double abhaya mudra, with both hands raised to shoulder height, palms facing outward. This rare and powerful gesture of fearlessness offers reassurance and divine protection in all directions, symbolically calming inner turmoil and dispelling obstacles on the path. The upright stance, combined with the open hands, gives the impression of a living presence gently holding the surrounding space in peace.
Crowning the head is the characteristically tall, flame‑shaped ushnisha of Sukhothai sculpture, signifying the radiance of enlightened insight. The Buddha’s hair is rendered in small, ordered curls, and the face is finely modelled: softly arched brows, elongated eyes cast gently downward, and full lips set in a subtle, compassionate smile. Elongated earlobes recall his princely youth, when he wore heavy ornaments before renouncing worldly status in search of truth.
The monastic robe clings in elegant, sweeping folds over the slender body, wrapping the left shoulder and leaving the right bare. The rhythmic drapery lines emphasise the vertical flow of the figure and echo the calm rise of the ushnisha, drawing the eye upward. From head to lotus base, the proportions are harmonious and assured, typical of the best Thai bronze casting.
A rich, naturally mottled patina—layers of warm brown and soft green—enhances the sculpture’s sense of age and authenticity. Light catches gently along the robe folds and facial contours, bringing out the refinement of the modelling without diminishing the quiet simplicity of the pose.
