  • Antique Indonesian Style Bronze Seated Javanese Teaching Gautama Buddha - 32cm/13"

    Measures (Height) 32cm/13"

A bronze Indonesian (Java) Teaching Gautama Buddha in 13th century Majapahit style.

The Buddha is seated on a round double lotus petal base. He is seated,in virasana, cross-legged symbol of serenityThe lotus flower pedestal represents purity, compassion and the giving of great joy to all.

His robe is draped over his left shoulder, and a portion of the garment that covers the left wrist falls behind the figure. The lower hem of the robe comes all the way down so that the under-cloth or skirt is completely covered.

An aureole, with flaming rim sits behind the head of the Buddha. A parasol above. This circle of light symbolises his divinity.

He has a third eye or urna on his forehead symbolizing the ability of Buddha to see past our mundane universe of suffering.

His hands are held in the dharmachakra mudra. In sanskrit dharmachakra means the 'Wheel of Dharma'. This mudra symbolises one of the most important moments in the life of Buddha, the occasion when he preached to his companions the first sermon after his Enlightenment in the Deer Park at Sarnath. It therefore denotes the setting into motion of the Wheel of the teaching of the Dharma. In this mudra the thumb and index finger touch at their tips to form a circle. This circle represents the Wheel of Dharma, or in metaphysical terms, the union of method and wisdom. This symbolises generosity.

Beautiful. I received the Buddha yesterday in the midst of a TREMENDOUS thunderstorm, and it was perfectly dry and nice. (Not only your plastic covering worked, but DHL was nice enough to put the entire box int a huge plastic bag.) Many thanks.

Paul, Boston, MA, USA

We received the reclining Buddha and we love it! Thanks again!

It is an amazing "museum quality" antique bronze!!! For a 19th century bronze antique, I believe the Newark, NJ Museum may express interest if I show them. However, they will never get it and I will have it in my collection for posterity. We will be doing much more business in the foreseeable future, count on it!!!
