  • Antique Indonesian Style Seated Bronze Javanese Enlightenment Buddha Statue - 14.5cm/6"

    Measures (Height) 14.5cm/6"

An Indonesian (Java) Enlightenment Buddha in 13th century Majapahit style. This lovely Buddha is seated on a circular single-lotus leaf pedestal, itself on a simple pedestal in the cross-legged yogic, adamantine posture of vajraparyankasana, the right leg over the left, with the soles of both feet facing upward. His robe is draped to leave the right shoulder bare, and a portion of the garment that covers the left wrist falls behind the figure. The lower hem of the robe comes all the way down so that the undercloth or skirt is completely covered.

An aureole can be seen behind the Buddha, with flaming edges and a lotus flower finial.

The piece is in the shape of the Bodhi tree that Buddha sat under to achieve enlightenment. The Bodhi tree represents the journey to enlightenment that Buddhists seek.

Here, the Buddha is seated in the Bhumisparsa or 'Calling the Earth to Witness' mudra. With fingers slightly touching the ground this position represents the subduing of Mara (a demon) who bombarded Buddha with demons, monsters, violent storms and the three seductive daughters. Remaining steadfast the Buddha testified to his meritorious past by pointing to the earth and calling the Earth Goddess, Thorani. Rising from the ground the Earth Goddess wrings the water from her long black hair. By this action she raises a torrential flood that drowns Mara and his army of demons. This gesture reflects this story symbolizing enlightenment, as well as steadfastness and Buddha's achievement of perfection or nirvana.

He also has a third eye or urna on his forehead symbolizing the ability of Buddha to see past our mundane universe of suffering. The large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head symbolises his high level of spiritual development.
