Buddha Statue - Antique Indonesian Style Bronze Javanese Meditation Buddha Statue - 49cm/20"
Measures (Height) 49cm/20"
An imposing Indonesian Javanese style Buddha perfect for those searching for serenity, meditation or an antidote to desire.
This delightful Buddha is seated on a lotus pedestal, in the adamantine posture of vajraparyankasana, the right leg over the left, with the soles of both feet facing upward.
The lotus flower represents the attaining of enlightenment and the ultimate fulfilment that follows. This symbol is heavily used in Eastern religions, which is why it can appear as both a held item or a seat. Some say that as the lotus flower grows in dirty water but becomes something beautiful, it demonstrates how we must forget our attachments to the material world around us and focus on our inner spirituality in order to seek happiness.
The pedestal itself is set upon the outstretched branches of the Bodhi tree. The Bodhi Tree also called the, Tree of Awakening, Mahabodhi Tree or Bo Tree, is a large sacred fig tree. Siddhartha Gautama, the spiritual teacher who became known as the Buddha, is said to have attained enlightenment or Buddhahood, circa 500 BCE under this tree.
His royal robes are draped over his left shoulder. The lower helm of the robe comes all the way down so that the undercloth or skirt is completely covered.
Buddha hands are held in a meditation Mudra. Fingers barely touching and gently folded over the lap with palms facing upward - representing gentleness and purity.
The Meditation Buddha's posture signifies a state of deep contemplation and tranquility. It reflects the Buddha's profound inner peace and mental serenity attained through meditation and mindfulness.
The Meditation hand gesture, with the thumbs touching, represents focused concentration and meditative absorption. It symbolizes the Buddha's unwavering commitment to meditation as a means to gain insight and wisdom.
Here Buddha's eyes are downcast, his compassionate face bestowing peace, blessings and inner serenity on his devotees. The Buddha symbolizes both mercy and wisdom.
The Buddha is surrounded by a flaming aureole, representing his divinity. His head protected by a canopy.
The large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head symbolises his high level of spiritual development.
The Buddhist disciples - Shariputra and Maudgalyayana are depicted either side of Buddha. Each is sat respectfully with their legs to one side, with hands together in adoration pose. Here the sculptor has imparted a touching sense of youthful tenderness. Contemporaries of Buddha, they were legendary for their piety and power.
