Measures – (Height) 99cm/40”
Antique Thai Style bronze Ayutthaya standing Thoughtful Buddha statue.
The Buddha is is stood samabhanga on a large double lotus leaf pedestal. The lotus flower represents purity, compassion and the giving of great joy to all.
The figure is remarkable for its realistic yet delicate delineation of the limbs and the robe which seems to cling to the body.
The garment (sanghati) covers both shoulders. The enlightened Buddha is depicted in the Thoughtful mudra. The Buddhist symbol for those born on a Sunday. The Pang Thawai Net Buddha. Representing an Open-Eye posture, the Buddha stands with hands crossed over his chest, in pensive thought. The right hand is placed over the left. Here, the enlightened Buddha contemplates his achievements and knowledge, standing still for 7 days under the Bodhi Tree to contemplate the suffering of all living things.
A very naturalistic succession of wavy folds on the surface of his body revealing the soft contours of the body underneath. His face is handsome with a slight smile and straight aquiline nose.
The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings. The casting is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face and fingers. Each detail is rendered perfectly.
