Antique Khmer Style Bronze Reclining Nirvana Buddha Statue - 65cm/26" Long
Measures - (Length) 65cm/26" x (Height) 25cm/10"
An antique Khmer style sculpture depicting the Buddha in nirvana or enlightenment pose. The large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head symbolizes his high level of spiritual development.
The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings.
A circular aureole, in the shape of a mandala, sits behind the head of the Buddha. The aureole or circle of light symbolises his divinity. The mandala is a sacred and intricate geometric design that holds profound meaning and spiritual significance in Buddhism. This symbolic representation is not merely a piece of art but a powerful tool for meditation, spiritual growth, and understanding the cosmos. The Mandala embodies the interconnectedness of all things, the cosmic order, and the spiritual journey toward enlightenment. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the mandala serves as a powerful tool for meditation, self-discovery, and inner transformation. It reminds individuals of their place in the universe and their potential for transcendence and spiritual growth.
The peaceful countenance of Lord Buddha exudes harmony. The Buddha is laying down on his side in calm repose. This pose captures him in his final moments before his death. The pose is also referred to as the sleeping Buddha and symbolises the Buddha's achievement of nirvana or enlightenment. The Buddha knew the exact moment of his death and at this time lay down to sleep and simply passed away peacefully with his enlightened soul eternally escaping the cycle of samasara.
The casting is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face and robes. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The distinctive patina of the piece is also particularly delightful.
