An antique Chola‑style bronze standing Ganesha, depicted in the rare form of Bridegroom Ganesha, or Mappillai Ganapathi, holding an umbrella and water vessel. Ganesha stands firmly on a circular lotus pedestal, his rounded belly, gently swaying posture and richly detailed textiles giving the sculpture a lively, celebratory presence that is immediately engaging.
In this wedding form, Ganesha is shown as a handsome, youthful deity associated with marriage rites and auspicious new beginnings. The umbrella and pot are traditional symbols of the Hindu bridegroom: during Brahmin marriage ceremonies the groom carries an umbrella and a vessel of water, which is poured over the couple’s joined hands to seal their union.
Here, these items become extensions of Ganesha’s blessing, signifying protection, fertility, prosperity and the sacred bond between individual soul and divine consciousness. Behind his head a fire‑rimmed aureole or prabhamandala confirms his divinity, framing the figure with a subtle halo of light.
