Antique Indonesian Style Seated Bronze Javanese Teaching Buddha Statue - 26cm/10"
Measures (Height) 26cm/10"
An Indonesian (Java) Teaching Buddha in refined 13th‑century Majapahit style, radiating calm authority and quiet spiritual depth. This finely modelled sculpture beautifully unites devotional symbolism with elegant Javanese aesthetics.
The Buddha is seated in half‑lotus (Padmasana) upon a circular double‑lotus pedestal, which itself rests on a decorated base. The lotus, blooming unsullied from the mud, symbolises purity, spiritual awakening, and the unfolding of enlightenment. His robe is draped to leave the right shoulder bare, with the cloth falling gracefully behind the figure at the left wrist. The lower hem of the garment descends fully, completely covering the undercloth and emphasising the simplicity and dignity of monastic attire.
His hands are raised before the chest in the dharmachakra mudra, the “Wheel of Dharma” gesture. This mudra commemorates one of the most important moments in the Buddha’s life: the first sermon at the Deer Park in Sarnath, when he set the Wheel of Teaching in motion after his enlightenment. The thumb and index finger of both hands touch to form circles, representing the Wheel of Dharma and, in a deeper sense, the union of method and wisdom that leads to liberation.
Behind the Buddha is a circular halo, affirming his enlightened nature. The pedestal is framed by an aureole with a beaded border and flaming rim, rising to a lotus finial at the top—visual symbols of his radiance, divinity, and the transformative power of his teachings. A lotus flower at the base further reinforces themes of purity, compassion, and the possibility of rising above worldly suffering.
With its harmonious proportions, clear iconography, and gentle presence, this Majapahit‑style Teaching Buddha is ideal for creating a contemplative focal point in any home, office, or sacred space. It invites reflection on the Buddha’s first turning of the Wheel of Dharma and offers a timeless reminder of wisdom, clarity, and inner peace.
