    Measurements Height 29cm/12"

A compelling Indonesian bronze ritual object cast in the form of a crescent-bladed ceremonial Chandrasa axe and surmounted by a powerful vajra finial. The broad, symmetrical crescent blade is ornamented with a central protective mask, framed by scrolling foliate motifs and textured panels. From its upper edge rises an architectural shaft, divided into decorative registers and crowned by a sculptural vajra with curling outer prongs surrounding a central point.

The vajra—Sanskrit for both “thunderbolt” and “diamond”—is one of the most potent emblems of esoteric Buddhism. It signifies the adamantine, indestructible quality of awakened wisdom and the force that destroys ignorance. In the Hindu-Buddhist cultures of Java and Bali, vajras were employed as significant ritual implements and sacred symbols. Java has a long history of Buddhist bronze casting, including vajras and vajra-bearing deities associated with Vajrayāna or Tantric Buddhist practice.

Here, the fusion of a broad axe-like blade with a vajra-form apex creates an image of spiritual authority and protection. The object’s crescent-shaped lower section may draw on the Indonesian tradition of ceremonial bronze axes, while its vajra finial anchors it within a later esoteric Hindu-Buddhist visual world. The decorative scrollwork, stylised mask, lotus-derived bands, and imposing formal balance create an object with both ritual resonance and sculptural presence.

The bronze has developed a deep dark-brown surface with naturally varied areas of green patina, enhancing the crisp cast ornament and lending the piece a powerful, time-worn character. Presented on a discreet modern custom stand, it offers a striking focal point for a collection of Indonesian, Javanese, Balinese, Buddhist, or ritual bronzes.

    Key features

    • Indonesian Hindu-Buddhist bronze ceremonial axe or axe-form ritual emblem.

    • Broad, symmetrical crescent blade with upward-sweeping terminals.

    • Prominent vajra / dorje finial, formed with a central spike and curving outer prongs.

    • Central stylised mask or guardian-face motif to the blade.

    • Richly cast scrolling foliage, lotus-derived bands, and textured ornament.

    • Strong Majapahit or Balinese stylistic associations.

    • Vajra symbolism relates to spiritual power, awakened wisdom, and the destruction of ignorance.

    • Deep brown bronze with attractive green patination.

    • Mounted on a modern black display stand.

    Iconography

The upper vajra is central to the interpretation of this object. A conventional vajra has a central axis surrounded by prongs, often four outer prongs curving toward a central spike at each end. In esoteric Buddhism, the form expresses the union of diamond-like indestructibility and thunderbolt-like spiritual force.

Vajras were used in ritual alongside a bell (ghanta). In this pairing, the vajra can signify skilful means or compassionate action, while the bell represents transcendent wisdom; together they express the complementary qualities required for enlightenment. Bronze vajras and vajra-topped ritual bells were used in Indonesian Vajrayāna Buddhist contexts, and ritual vajra-and-bell implements remain part of Balinese Buddhist practice.

    Suggested FAQs

What is the symbol at the top?

The finial is a vajra, also known as a dorje: a sacred ritual emblem associated with esoteric Buddhism. Its name means both “thunderbolt” and “diamond,” combining the ideas of irresistible spiritual force and indestructible wisdom.

    Is this a weapon?

It is best understood as a ceremonial or ritual object, rather than a practical weapon. Although the lower section has the outline of a crescent axe, its thin blade, richly ornamental casting, and vajra finial favour symbolic, devotional, or prestige use.

What does the green patina mean?

The green surface is a copper-alloy corrosion product, commonly called verdigris.

How should it be cared for?

Keep it indoors under stable, dry conditions and away from direct sunlight and high humidity. Handle the object only by its secure mounting or strongest central section; avoid pressure on the thin crescent blade and delicate vajra prongs. Do not use metal polish, abrasive cloths, or household cleaning products, as these can damage the historic surface and patina.

Just a quick note to let you know your package arrived in fine shape a while ago. (DHL, your shipper, is a very good shipping service; even though I wound up being home when the delivery was made, I was glad to have been able to pre-arrange my electronic signature/authorization to leave the package on my porch, should I not have been home to receive it; that option is a very nice one as it saves the recipient from having to wait around all day, in order to sign for a delivery. I very much like the bronze bust. The coloring is particularly appealing. I've placed it on a bookcase just inside the front entry...it looks great!!!. Very handsome piece. Thanks again for having shipped so quickly, for packing the bust so carefully and for your helpful statuses throughout the transaction process. You are so very good to do business with.
