Buddha Statue - Antique Indonesian Style Bronze Javanese Teaching Buddha Statue - 32cm/13"
Measures (Height) 32cm/13"
An Indonesian (Java) enthroned Teaching Buddha, surrounded by acolytes of Buddha in Meditation pose, in 13th century Majapahit style.
This lovely Buddha is seated on a round double lotus leaf pedestal, itself on a square plinth, in the vajra position with his right leg is panhandle resting upon a lotus flower. The lotus flower represents purity, compassion and the giving of great joy to all.
His robe is draped to leave the right shoulder bare, and a portion of the garment that covers the left wrist falls behind the figure. The lower hem of the robe comes all the way down so that the undercloth or skirt is completely covered.
The Buddha is seated in the Teaching or Dharmachakra position. This mudra symbolises one of the most important moments in the life of Buddha, the occasion when he preached to his companions the first sermon after his Enlightenment in the Deer Park at Sarnath. It therefore denotes the setting into motion of the Wheel of the teaching of the Dharma. In this mudra the thumb and index finger touch at their tips to form a circle. This circle represents the Wheel of Dharma, or in metaphysical terms, the union of method and wisdom. This symbolises generosity. The detail and patina of the piece are delightful.
Either side of Buddha his acolytes are seated in Dhyana or Meditation pose. Each Buddha is also seated on a double lotus leaf pedestal. This hand gesture promotes the energy of meditation, deep contemplation and unity with higher energy. Fingers barely touching and gently folded over the lap with palms facing upward - representing gentleness and purity.
In their hands each Meditation Buddha holds an alms bowl demonstrating the charity and generosity of the Buddha.
The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings. The peaceful countenance of Lord Buddha exudes harmony.
Each Buddha is backed by an aureole with a lotus leaf border, topped by a lotus flower finial.
Each also has a third eye or urna on his forehead symbolizing the ability of Buddha to see past our mundane universe of suffering.
The large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head symbolises his high level of spiritual development.
