Antique Thai Style Bronze Sukhothai Reclining Nirvana Buddha Statue - 29cm/12"
Measures (Length) 29cm/12"
An antique Thai Sukhothai‑style Buddha depicting the Buddha in nirvana, or final enlightenment, pose.
This serene sculpture shows the Buddha reclining gently on his side, capturing the moment of his Parinirvana—his final passing from the earthly realm after complete awakening. The large ushnisha, the cranial protuberance at the top of his head, symbolizes his elevated spiritual attainment and profound inner wisdom.
The Buddha’s face is composed and tranquil, with downcast, introspective eyes and a firm yet gentle brow that conveys deep meditation and unshakeable calm. His elongated earlobes, stretched from his youth as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings, quietly recall the wealth and status he renounced in pursuit of truth. The casting is exceptionally refined, evident in the delicate modeling of the facial features and the subtle, flowing lines of the robes—each detail rendered with great care and precision.
The statue’s distinctive patina further enhances its character, lending warmth, depth, and a sense of age that speaks to its long history. The peaceful countenance of the Buddha radiates harmony, inviting contemplation and stillness from all who gaze upon him. Often referred to as the Sleeping Buddha, this pose symbolizes the Buddha’s complete liberation from the cycle of samsara, underscoring the serene inevitability of his final release.
According to tradition, the Buddha knew the exact moment of his passing. When that time arrived, he lay down calmly, entered deep meditative absorption, and passed away peacefully, his enlightened consciousness forever freed from rebirth. This sculpture captures that quiet, sacred transition with remarkable dignity.
The Buddha is shown resting upon a double lotus pedestal. In Buddhist symbolism, the lotus flower represents the attainment of enlightenment and the profound fulfillment that follows. Because the lotus rises pure and radiant from muddy waters, it beautifully illustrates the journey from ignorance and attachment to clarity and awakening. As such, it appears in Eastern religions both as a held attribute and as a seat or base. Many see in the lotus a reminder that, though we live amid the “mud” of worldly concerns, we can cultivate inner purity by releasing material attachments and focusing on our spiritual growth.
Together, the reclining pose, refined Sukhothai styling, luminous patina, and lotus base create a deeply contemplative image—one that embodies peace, completion, and the timeless promise of enlightenment.

My partner got back from Thailand this evening, and was surprised and delighted to see the walking Buddha statue I bought from you recently. We both like it very much indeed - you don't see so many walking Buddha statues, and this one is very well moulded and finely detailed. You also packed it very thoroughly for posting. So thank you very much! It looks very beautiful in our hall, facing visitors as they come through our front door.
