Antique Khmer Style Bronze Standing Temple Guardian or Lion - 40cm/16"
Measures (Height) 40cm/16"
An antique Khmer‑style temple guardian lion, cast in the spirit of the pre‑Angkor Banteay Srei tradition (10th century). Bold and dignified, this guardian combines protective power with the refined ornament and quiet elegance that characterise early Khmer sculpture.
These lions served as more than decoration: positioned at temple approaches and gateways they acted as vigilant guardians, announcing and defending sacred thresholds while warding off malevolent forces. The form therefore balances muscular strength with a calm, watchful presence—an image of both authority and spiritual protection.
This example is modelled in the round, presenting a strong, compact body and a richly ornamented coiffure. The face is expressive: full lips, almond-shaped eyes with incised pupils beneath gently curving brows, and a stylised mane that flows into the shoulders. The modelling emphasises the lion’s powerful musculature while retaining the graceful, stylised vocabulary of Khmer stone and bronze carving.
The casting is of fine quality, evident in the crisp definition of the facial features, mane, and carved details—each element carefully resolved to convey both realism and symbolic purpose. A warm, distinctive patina lends depth and an authentic sense of age, enhancing the sculpture’s tactile and visual appeal.
As an object of cultural and artistic significance, this temple guardian makes a striking focal point. Whether displayed at the entrance to a home, as part of a curated collection, or within a sacred space, it imparts a sense of protection, dignity, and timeless Southeast Asian craftsmanship.

It is an amazing "museum quality" antique bronze!!! For a 19th century bronze antique, I believe the Newark, NJ Museum may express interest if I show them. However, they will never get it and I will have it in my collection for posterity. We will be doing much more business in the foreseeable future, count on it!!!

Thank you so very much! Well, I needed Buddha here -- and I certainly now have Buddha here in many ways and many forms -- with thanks to HDAsianArt. Each statue you've sent has worked out very well -- each in its own way -- each combined in settings with other art pieces -- each has blended well -- finishing off different areas of my home -- and all communicates well to tell a story of different aspects of my life. I intentionally chose your pieces -- to get away from the "norm" of beautiful gild Buddhas that everyone has -- your pieces are quite unique -- and a bit more "real" -- which serves my purpose well. So, thank you.
