Lokeshvara Statue - Antique Khmer Style Seated Bronze Bayon Style Lokeshvara - 39cm/16"
Measures (Height) 39cm/16" (Weight) 3.9kg/8.6lbs
This remarkable antique Khmer Bayon-style sculpture depicts Lokeshvara, the compassionate bodhisattva of infinite mercy and benevolence. The figure is seated in the traditional pan-handleposture, exuding calm authority and divine presence. Resting serenely atop Lokeshvara’s crowned head is a small, seated Amitabha Buddha in deep meditation, symbolizing enlightenment and spiritual lineage.
The sculpture rests on a plain yet dignified pedestal, allowing the viewer’s focus to remain on the gentle harmony of the figure above. Lokeshvara’s face is masterfully rendered, with softly contoured features that embody both strength and serenity. The expression is tranquil—eyes cast downward in meditative repose, their heavy lids carved with graceful precision. Gently arched brows meet above a broad, proportionate nose, while full lips, curved into a restrained smile, radiate compassion. The subtle incised outline framing the mouth adds refinement and depth, enhancing the lifelike character of the visage.
Covering the head is a mass of meticulously braided and coiled hair, gathered into a tall chignon-shaped topknot—a distinctive hallmark of Bayon-period artistry. The ornamentation along the neck and arms is delicately bejeweled, suggesting both divine richness and spiritual grace.
In his right hand, Lokeshvara holds a kalasha, the sacred vessel revered in Vedic tradition. The kalasha, often described as an “overflowing full vase,” is believed to contain amrita—the elixir of immortality. Within Hindu and Buddhist symbolism alike, it represents abundance, wisdom, and the source of life itself. In this sculpture, the vessel gently reinforces Lokeshvara’s role as a benevolent bestower of compassion and eternal vitality.
The result is a composition of tranquil majesty, where spirituality, artistry, and symbolism merge seamlessly. Every contour—from the serene visage to the perfectly balanced posture—reveals the exquisite craftsmanship and devotional depth of Khmer sculptural tradition during the majestic Bayon period.
This traditional in appearance piece is sure to add a unique touch to any room of your home or workplace.
