A delightful antique Baphuon‑style stone torso of a devi or goddess, probably Lakshmi, from Cambodia.
This hand‑carved Khmer sandstone deity, executed in the classical Baphuon style, is elegantly modelled from a solid block of stone and presented as found. As is typical of works from this period, the ornamentation displays a perfect mastery of sculptural technique and fluidity of line. The treatment of the form retains characteristics of the earlier Banteay Srei style, but with a slightly softer, more refined delicacy.
The goddess is rendered in realistic human form, standing in a strong frontal posture and now mounted on a later wood and metal base. Her sampot is cut shorter to reveal much of the abdomen with graceful, sweeping curves, rising high at the back where it is secured at the waist by an ornate belt. The incised lines and decorative motifs of the sampot are of exceptional finesse, exemplifying an art of great quality—less lavish than Banteay Srei, yet more restrained and distinguished.
Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity—both material and spiritual—as well as light, wisdom, fortune, fertility, generosity, and courage. The embodiment of beauty, grace, and charm, she is also known as Mahalakshmi, bringer of good fortune and protector of her devotees from hardship and financial misfortune.
The patina and carved details of this torso are particularly appealing, with time‑softened surfaces that enhance its sense of age and presence. The figure is loosely mounted on its wood and metal plinth to allow for careful handling and display. For safe transport, the torso will be professionally wood‑crated at no additional cost, ensuring it arrives securely.
