An antique Khmer-style standing Brahma in the Cambodian Koh Ker tradition.
Brahma, the Hindu god of creation, is one of the Trimurti alongside Vishnu and Shiva. Here he stands with eight arms, holding attributes including a bell, a sutra or holy book symbolising sacred knowledge, a lotus bud, a mandala or chakra representing cosmic order, mala beads, and a kalasha, emblem of abundance.
The kalasha is revered in the Vedas as a “source of life” and symbol of plenitude, described as an overflowing vase believed to contain amrita, the elixir of immortality. As such, it represents abundance, wisdom, and eternal life.
This finely cast, three-dimensional Khmer representation of Brahma is closely related to sculptures from the Bayon temple complex in western Cambodia. He wears traditional Khmer jewellery, including elaborate earrings and a richly ornamented mukuta (crown).
The god is shown with four identical heads, their twisted hair arranged in horizontal bands in classic Koh Ker fashion to form a quadruple jatamukuta, surmounted by a lotus flower motif. Each serene face has open eyes with incised pupils, continuous arched brows, neatly defined lips, and a delicately curled moustache, gazing toward the north, south, east, and west.
The compelling sense of power and presence is typical of the Koh Ker style, softened by the gentle facial features and richly detailed adornments. His tiara-like mukuta is intricately decorated, reflecting a tradition that evolved in Cambodia from the 10th century through the post-Angkor period.
The casting is exceptionally crisp, with beautifully rendered details in the faces, hands, and ornaments. Traditional in appearance and rich in symbolism, this sculpture will bring a sense of serenity, reverence, and timeless style to any home, office, or sacred space.
