Antique Phnom Da Style Stone Mounted Vishnu Head - Protector & Preserver - 33cm/13"
Measures (Height) 33cm/13"
An antique early 7th century Phnom Da style stone Vishnu head.
Vishnu is both world protector and preserver, restorer of moral order - he is all-powerful and all-pervasive by nature.
The Phnom Da period, also known as the Funan period, is a lesser-known but pivotal epoch in the history of the Khmer civilization. Nestled in the heart of Southeast Asia, the Khmer Empire flourished during various periods, each marked by its unique cultural, architectural, and political achievements.
The Phnom Da period, situated between the Chenla and Angkor eras, serves as a bridge between these more renowned epochs.
The architecture of the Phnom Da period is less grandiose and monumental compared to the Angkor period that followed. Nevertheless, it showcased the early Khmer's proficiency. Stone religious sculptures were skilfully carved.
This Phnom Da Vishnu embodies authority with his iconic downcast gaze and large unexpressive face. The general silhouette is heavier. The carving is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The features suggest the prana, or inner breath, that signifies superhuman power.
The simple carving of the diadem provide a delightful contrast with the complex presentation of the face. The inner rims of the ears display the characteristic tripart scalloped treatment. The lobes complete and hanging low. The face is defined by slightly arched eyebrows, full rimmed lips, moustache, open rimmed eyes and a rather broad, flat nose.
The deity wears a cylindrical mitre on his head.
A graceful piece with round face, long earlobes, arched eyebrows and slight smile, typical of the Phnom Da period. The Vishnu has perfect balance and proportions which are the key to a fine Vishnu sculpture.
The carving is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The details of this piece are particularly appealing.
The Vishnu is mounted on a wood base (later).
The perfect traditional in appearance Vishnu to bring serenity and timeless style to you home, office or sacred space.
