Antique Khmer Style Baphuon Reclining Bronze Vishnu Statue - 32cm/13"
Measurements - Height 32cm/13"
An antique Khmer Style reclining bronze Vishnu in the Baphuon style.
Vishnu is both world protector and preserver, restorer of moral order - he is all-powerful and all-pervasive by nature.
The imagery of the reclining Vishnu encapsulates profound metaphysical truths and spiritual insights within Hinduism.
The reclining posture of Vishnu, known as Ananta Shayana or Ananta-Sayin, represents the cosmic sleep of the universe. It symbolizes the state of divine rest and tranquility that pervades the cosmos between cycles of creation, preservation, and dissolution. Vishnu's reclining form suggests a profound sense of serenity and detachment from the material world, emphasizing the timeless and eternal nature of existence.
This representation of Vishnu, frequently seen in Khmer art, shows the God in cosmic sleep between cosmic eras. The bronze is similar in style to Catalog item 5387 in the Phnom Penh National Museum - the highlight of Udayadityavarman's reign which even now retains an almost supernatural power. The lavish jewellery cast on the image includes the remains of armlets, bracelets and a pectoral with seven pendants in back, reminder of its original grandeur.
Devotees of Vishnu often worship the reclining form of the deity with fervent devotion, seeking blessings for peace, prosperity, and spiritual liberation. Rituals such as the recitation of Vishnu Sahasranama (the thousand names of Vishnu) and offerings of flowers, fruits, and incense are common in Vishnu temples worldwide.
The reclining Vishnu serves as a focal point for meditation and contemplation, inspiring seekers to attain inner peace and enlightenment.
The Vishnu has perfect balance and proportions which are the key to a fine Vishnu sculpture.
The casting is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face and hands. Each detail is rendered perfectly.
The patina and details of this piece are particularly appealing.
