Antique Khmer Style 8-Arm Bronze Bayon Brahma - Hindu God Creation - 35cm/14"
Measurements H35cm (14")
Antique Khmer style seated Brahma in the post-Angkor, Bayon style. Brahma's four faces look North, South, East and West.
Brahma is the Hindu God of Creation and one of the Trimurti, the others being Vishnu and Shiva. He is sitting with his eight arms holding items including, a mirror, sutra (holy book), staff, mandala, a conch shell and kalasha.
The kalasha is considered a symbol of abundance and "source of life" in the Vedas. It is referred to as "overflowing full vase" in the Vedas. The Kalasha is believed to contain amrita, the elixir of life, and thus is viewed as a symbol of abundance, wisdom, and immortality.
This three-dimensional Khmer representation of Brahma is stylistically related to sculptures found at the Bayon temple in western Cambodia. The god is shown here with four heads that are identical in appearance. Strands of twisted hair arranged in horizontal lines in typical Bayon style form the quadruple jatamukuta. Each is encircled by a band of large pearls, a specific Khmer characteristic not found earlier in the art of other Southeast Asian cultures. The top of the conjoined jatamukutas is decorated with a flower with four petals framed by twisted tresses of hair.
Each face has open eyes with incised pupils, eyebrows represented by a continuous line, rimmed lips, and a moustache that curls up at the tips.
Brahma is sat upon a large pedestal. This pedestal is separate to the sculpture of Brahma. Brahma is sat 'loose' upon the pedestal.
The casting is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of each face. Each detail is rendered perfectly.
Traditional in appearance, the sculpture will bring serenity and timeless style to your home, office or sacred space.
