An antique Angkor Wat style Khmer Vishnu, stood samapada, on. simple pedestal.The sculpture is in 12th century Angkor Wat style. The fullness of the form gives the face a softness which accentuates the almost downcast eyes, and the fleshy and sensual lips. The anatomy shows a strong sense of observation. The overall silhouette is elegant and a reminder of the Angkorian Art. In the Angkor Wat style the moustache of Vishnu is clearly visible.
The image is cast in the round with the back as carefully detailed as the front.
The ornate casting of the diadem provides a delightful contrast with the smooth, facial features. His braided hair is dressed into a lotus bud shaped ushnisha, symbolising his purity.The inner rims of the ears appear to display the characteristic tripart scalloped treatment. The lobes are stretched. The face is defined by slightly arched eyebrows, full rimmed lips, wide open rimmed eyes and a rather broad, flat nose.
The sculpture certainly possesses a serenity, evoking the aesthetic of the Angkor period.
