Antique Indonesian Style Javanese Majapahit Standing Bronze Lokeshvara Statue - Protector & Preserver - 44cm/18"
Measurements Height 44cm/18"
An antique Java-style standing bronze Lokeshvara, rendered in the refined 13th‑century Majapahit tradition. Elegant and contemplative, this sculpture embodies the serene compassion of one of Buddhism’s most cherished Bodhisattvas.
Lokeshvara (Avalokiteshvara, later known as Guanyin in East Asia) is among the most revered figures in Buddhist iconography. As a Bodhisattva of infinite compassion, he represents the vow to alleviate suffering and seek enlightenment not only for oneself, but for all sentient beings. He perfectly expresses the Bodhisattva ideal, placing altruism and mercy above personal liberation, listening to the cries of the world and responding with wisdom and skilful means.
He stands in samabhanga, a poised and balanced stance, upon a simple pedestal loosely mounted on a wooden base, giving the figure both stability and presence. His face is gently downcast, suggesting inner stillness, empathy, and meditative awareness. Upon his head rests a decorative Javanese-style tiara before the tall conical kirita-makuta crown, a sign of spiritual authority and mastery over both positive and negative tendencies. The aquiline nose, elongated earlobes, and large earrings all reflect classical Javanese-Buddhist aesthetics.
Atop Lokeshvara’s crown sits a small seated, meditating Amitabha Buddha, identifying him as the compassionate attendant of the Buddha of Infinite Light and underscoring his role as guide, protector, and saviour of beings. His left hand forms a teaching gesture, with thumb and finger joined in a circle, symbolising the transmission of Dharma and the perfection of wisdom. His right hand extends in the boon-bestowing varada mudra, the wish‑fulfilling gesture of generosity, blessing, and compassionate response to devotees’ needs.
Lokeshvara stands as a powerful and timeless symbol of compassion in Buddhism and beyond. Across cultures and centuries, his image has inspired practitioners to cultivate kindness, relieve suffering, and work for the well-being of all beings, making his message as relevant today as it was in the Majapahit era.
The bronze surface is enriched with a wonderful azurite and malachite patina, lending depth, colour, and a strong sense of age and authenticity. Graceful, spiritually resonant, and visually striking, this sculpture makes an ideal focal point for a home, office, or sacred space, inviting a spirit of compassion, calm, and quiet dignity wherever it is placed.

It is an amazing "museum quality" antique bronze!!! For a 19th century bronze antique, I believe the Newark, NJ Museum may express interest if I show them. However, they will never get it and I will have it in my collection for posterity. We will be doing much more business in the foreseeable future, count on it!!!

Thank you so very much! Well, I needed Buddha here -- and I certainly now have Buddha here in many ways and many forms -- with thanks to HDAsianArt. Each statue you've sent has worked out very well -- each in its own way -- each combined in settings with other art pieces -- each has blended well -- finishing off different areas of my home -- and all communicates well to tell a story of different aspects of my life. I intentionally chose your pieces -- to get away from the "norm" of beautiful gild Buddhas that everyone has -- your pieces are quite unique -- and a bit more "real" -- which serves my purpose well. So, thank you.
