An antique Khmer style Hanuman statue in 12th century Bayon style. Hanuman is a god and an ardent devotee of the god Rama and an avatar of the god Shiva.

The concept of a military commander in monkey form derives from the Hindu epic of the Ramayana, where Prince Rama's forces were aided by the monkey army led by the monkey General Hanuman.
