  • Antique Khmer Style Bronze Seated Meditation Naga Buddha Statue - 42cm/17"

    Measures (Height) 42cm/17"

A Khmer style seated meditation Buddha, seated on a three-tired throne, with the flaring head of a giant Naga, the serpent King Muchalinda, rising behind protectively behind. His hands are in the Dhyana mudra, the gesture of Medtiation.

The Buddha's face is serene, with a naturalistic and warm expression; his head is topped by a detailed ushnisha, in the Khmer style. In his hands in holds an alms bowl representing the charity and compassion of Buddha.

The serpent is well rendered and symmetrical. The throne is formed by the coils of the serpent. In the Buddhist culture the Naga or serpent offers protection. The story told here being that Muchalinda protected the Buddha from heavy rain.

On the reverse of the Naga can be seen a Mandala. A mandala generally represents the spiritual journey, starting from outside to the inner core, through layers.

The statue is cast in the round, rather than as a relief on a stela. From this, we can infer that Khmer sculptors would have desired their artwork to be viewed from all sides and thus placed in the center of temples rather than against a wall. While this artwork was religious - priests supervised its execution - its realism is unmistakable.

The Buddhas hands are in Dhyana Mudra, the hand gesture that promotes the energy of meditation, deep contemplation and unity with higher energy. This traditional in appearance piece is sure to add serenity to your home, office or sacred space.

Let Us Help You Find The Piece You Desire

As a collector of bronze idols of Buddhist and Hindu origin, I was very impressed by the fine quality and patina of the Dancing Shiva I recently purchased from HD Asian Art.

I want to especially convey my thanks to James for his patience and expertise as I made my choice. I will be sure to recommend HD Asian Art to my friends and fellow collectors.

My collection welcomes the addition of this statue of Lord Nataraja. It is a good example of Khmer art and workmanship.
