Antique Indonesian Style Standing Bronze Javanese Teaching Buddha Statue - 39cm/16"
Measures (Height) 39cm/16"
An unusual and beautiful antique Indonesian (Java) style Teaching Buddha in 13th century Majapahit style.
This lovely Buddha is stood samabhanga on a delicate bronze pedestal. His robe is draped over both shoulders, cascading down his both, reminiscent of the Thai Dvaravati style.
The lower hem of the robe comes all the way down so that the undercloth or skirt is almost completely covered. His serene face displays down cast eyes and aquiline nose. The Buddha is stood with his left hand raised in front of his chest in the Dharmachakra mudra. In sanskrit dharmachakra means the 'Wheel of Dharma'.
His right hand holds the hem of his robes, in the traditional Indonesian manner.
The Dharmachakra mudra symbolises one of the most important moments in the life of Buddha, the occasion when he preached to his companions the first sermon after his Enlightenment in the Deer Park at Sarnath. It therefore denotes the setting into motion of the Wheel of the teaching of the Dharma. In this mudra the thumb and index finger of both hands touch at their tips to form a circle. This circle represents the Wheel of Dharma, or in metaphysical terms, the union of method and wisdom.
Behind the head of Buddha can be seen an aureole. This symbolises the divinity of Buddha.
He also has a third eye or urna on his forehead symbolizing the ability of Buddha to see past our mundane universe of suffering.
Buddha is stood up on a decorated pedestal. The base includes a lotus flower. Upon which Buddha is stood. The lotus flower represents purity, compassion and the giving of great joy to all.
The rear of he pedestal is comprised of a checker board motif, decorated with a flaming rim and lotus Bud finial.
