Antique Khmer Style Mounted Bronze Phnom Da Buddha Head Statue - 54cm/22"
Measures (Height) 54cm/22"
An antique Khmer style Buddha head in the pre-Angkor 8th century Phnom Da style.
The early 8th century Khmer representation of the Buddha presents a classic, early interpretation of Buddha as it began its journey in Cambodia. Here the Buddha can be seen with a contemplative and meditative gaze. This image holds deep significance within Buddhist tradition, conveying essential teachings and embodying the virtues of inner peace, mindfulness, and spiritual reflection.
The hair is depicted in circles of tight curls that decrease in size toward the ushnisha. This style was inspired by early seventh century Dvaravati styles that can be traced back to styles in Gupta period India.
The face has half closed eyes that suggest an inner meditation , a rather sensuous mouth, aquiline nose and a barely dimpled chin.
His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings.
The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow. He has a large ushnisha protuberance on top of his head symbolizing his high level of spiritual development. The peaceful countenance of Lord Buddha exudes harmony.
Although the style resembles Dvaravati images carved in Thailand, the present Buddha is more sensuous than most Dvaravati Buddhas.
The Buddha here is an appealing blend of Gupta, Dvaravati and Khmer characteristics.
The Buddha has a peaceful countenance with downcast introspective eyes and a firm brow.
The Buddha is mounted on a wood and metal base.
His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings.
The casting is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The distinctive patina of the piece is also particularly delightful.
This traditional in appearance piece is sure to add serenity to your home, office or sacred space. One of the most recognisable of the Asian deities this representation of the spiritual teacher Buddha is sure to enlighten your home with endlessly timeless style.
