Antique Burmese Style Shan Gold Lacquer Buddha Head - 56cm/22"
Measures - (Height) 56cm/22"
An antique Burmese style Shan Buddha head fragment that probably dates to the late 19th, early 20th century. The Buddha is modeled in traditional 'Ava' style - hollow and made of dry lacquer.
This Burmese technique is called 'Thayo', which is a type of relief-moulded lacquer.
The head is sensitively rendered with a softly contoured face and serene contemplative expression, with arched eyebrows bowed high towards the forehead, set above heavy-lidded eyes, a narrow well-shaped nose, bow-shaped lips with an insipid smile, and prominent elongated ears. The head is covered in thorn-like hair curls, surmounted by a domed 'Ushnisha', rising to a loose fitting stylised lotus bud finial. This 'Kecil' (pinnacle) is carved from teak wood. His earlobes are stretched long from a youth spent as a prince wearing heavy gold earrings.
The surface has a beautifully aged gilded gold patina. The Buddha is loose mounted on a metal and wood base (later).
For it's age and delicacy the sculpture is in excellent condition.
This traditional in appearance piece is sure to add serenity to your home, office or sacred space.
One of the most recognisable of the Asian deities this representation of the spiritual teacher Buddha is sure to enlighten your home with endlessly timeless style.

Thank you so very much! Well, I needed Buddha here -- and I certainly now have Buddha here in many ways and many forms -- with thanks to HDAsianArt. Each statue you've sent has worked out very well -- each in its own way -- each combined in settings with other art pieces -- each has blended well -- finishing off different areas of my home -- and all communicates well to tell a story of different aspects of my life. I intentionally chose your pieces -- to get away from the "norm" of beautiful gild Buddhas that everyone has -- your pieces are quite unique -- and a bit more "real" -- which serves my purpose well. So, thank you.
