Antique Khmer Style Standing Bronze Bayon Ganesha Statue and Yoni - 86cm/34"
Measures (Height) 86cm/34"
An antique Khmer Bayon-style Ganesha, standing in samabhanga atop a yoni base—a potent symbol of fertility, generative energy, and the creative power of Shiva. This striking bronze exemplifies the richly layered, syncretic iconography of the post–Angkor Wat Bayon period.
The figure shows the characteristic facial features and ornate jewellery of Bayon art, with a strong yet refined presence. The cylindrical mass of hair piled into a high chignon, combined with the regimented curls, reflects the ecumenical nature of Bayon iconography: the towering coiffure alludes to the supreme form of Vishnu, while the curls recall Shiva, underscoring Ganesha’s connection to both Vaishnavite and Shaivite traditions. To the rear, the sampot is tied with a butterfly-style bow in classic post–Angkor Wat fashion, adding an elegant sculptural detail. The bronze bears a particularly attractive, matured patina that enhances its depth and sense of age.
Ganesha, the elephant-headed son of Shiva, appears here with multiple arms holding a rich array of attributes. He carries his broken tusk, symbol of sacrifice and the triumph of wisdom over pride, and a bowl of sweetmeats, representing the sweetness and rewards of spiritual practice. In his other hands he holds the chakra (discus) as a spiritual weapon, mala beads, a sutra or holy book, a gada (mace), a musical conch shell, and a kalasha. The kalasha, the “overflowing full vase” of Vedic tradition, is a powerful emblem of abundance and the source of life, believed to contain amrita, the elixir of immortality, and thus associated with prosperity, wisdom, and longevity.
The direction of Ganesha’s trunk is also significant: here it turns to his left, a form traditionally linked with success in worldly affairs and with the life of the householder (grihastha), making this image especially auspicious for home and family life. In his earliest Indian depictions, Ganesha was closely associated with fertility; over time he became universally revered as the Remover of Obstacles, Lord of Beginnings and Lord of Obstacles, patron of arts and sciences, and deity of intellect and wisdom.
The yoni upon which Ganesha stands further reinforces themes of fertility, energy, and creative potency. As an iconic symbol associated with Shiva—Ganesha’s father—it unites masculine and feminine principles, grounding the sculpture in deep cosmological and devotional meaning.
One of the most recognisable and beloved of Asian deities, this Bayon-style Ganesha combines powerful symbolism with refined craftsmanship. It is an exceptional piece to bring auspicious energy, cultural depth, and endlessly timeless style to any home, office, or sacred space.
