Buddha Head - Antique Thai Style Sukhothai Mounted Bronze Buddha Head - 22cm/9"
Measures - (Height) 22cm/9"
An antique 13th to 15th century Sukhothai style mounted Buddha Head, from Thailand, that reflects the spiritual journey towards awakening and the illumination of one's inner light.
The Sukhothai Empire, a paramount state that flourished from the 13th to the 15th century in what is now modern-day Thailand, stands as a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage and remarkable historical significance. Known for its innovative governance, architectural marvels, religious devotion, and artistic achievements, the Sukhothai Empire remains a pivotal chapter in Southeast Asian history.
The Buddha is formed of a thick bronze cast with good weight. The head is sensitively rendered with a softly contoured face and serene contemplative expression, with arched eyebrows bowed high towards the forehead, set above heavy-lidded eyes, a narrow well-shaped nose, bow-shaped lips with a serene smile, and prominent elongated ears.
Buddha features a heart shaped face, covered in thorn-like hair curls, surmounted by a flamed 'Ushnisha', in the Sukhothai tradition. The surface has a beautifully aged malachite patina.
The Sukhothai Buddha Head is a masterpiece of Thai sculpture, embodying the refined artistic sensibilities of the Sukhothai period. Crafted from bronze, the head features a serene expression, downcast eyes, and a gentle smile—an iconic representation of the Buddha's compassion and wisdom. The intricately carved headdress, adorned with flame-like motifs, adds to the regal and divine aura of the sculpture.
The Sukhothai Empire's legacy extends beyond its time, profoundly impacting the trajectory of Thailand's history. Its administrative principles laid the groundwork for later Thai states, while its emphasis on Buddhism and cultural expression endured through subsequent dynasties. The historical significance of Sukhothai is such that it remains a source of national pride for Thailand, with Sukhothai Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, serving as a tangible reminder of the empire's greatness.
The detached Buddha head holds profound symbolism within the context of Buddhist spirituality. The serene expression captures the essence of inner peace and enlightenment, inviting viewers to contemplate the teachings of the Buddha. The downcast eyes convey a sense of introspection and mindfulness, encouraging those who gaze upon it to turn inward and seek a deeper understanding of the self.
The flame-like motifs on the headdress are reminiscent of the Buddha's aura or "ushnisha," symbolizing the radiant energy of enlightenment. This subtle yet powerful symbolism reflects the spiritual journey towards awakening and the illumination of one's inner light.
The Buddha is mounted on a metal and wood base (later).
