A charming antique Thai‑style wooden monk’s fan, decorated in a traditional red and gold patina.

In Buddhist practice, the fan is often placed before a Buddha statue as a symbolic offering, representing the cooling of heat, suffering, and worldly desire, and inviting an atmosphere of peace and serenity. In Thai tradition, such ceremonial fans are used in consecration rites to “open the eyes” of a statue—symbolising the moment the image is ritually awakened as a living focus for devotion. For depictions of the Laughing Buddha, the fan further suggests good fortune and the granting of wishes.

Monks in Thailand employ fans like this during important ceremonies, both as instruments of blessing and as emblems of dignity. Historically, elaborately crafted fans were associated with high status and could be presented to honour significant monastic or royal occasions. Placing a fan in front of a Buddha sculpture today remains an act of reverence and gratitude, a quiet offering of respect by the practitioner.

With its warm tones and graceful form, this traditional ceremonial fan will add a distinctive touch of Thai sacred culture to any interior, enhancing a home, office, or meditation space with subtle colour and contemplative presence.

The items arrived safely on Friday afternoon. I am really pleased with all of them but the money box is a favourite at the moment because it is so unusual. Thank you again.
