Antique Khmer Style Stone Banteay Srei Hindu God Hanuman Statue - 55cm/22" Tall
Measures - (Height) 55cm/22"
A rare and expertly crafted antique Khmer style mounted stone Hanuman head in the pre-Angkorian style of the 10th century Banteay Srei period. Hanuman is a God and an ardent devotee of the god Rama and an avatar of the god Shiva.
Hanuman, the monkey God who aids Rama in rescuing his beloved wife, Sita, from the wicked Ravana (who has abducted her), in the Reamker, the Khmer version of the great Indian epic, the Ramayana.
The Bantreay Srei style developed at the same time as the Pre Rup style and overlaps that of the Kleang. It uses and develops the formulas of the Koh Ker style, the headdress with horizontal tresses and the conical mukuta.
Here the fullness of the forms give the face of Hanuman a softness which accentuates the eyes opened wide, and the fleshy and sensual lips.
The inner rims of the ears display the characteristic tripart scalloped treatment. The lobes holding lotus earrings. The lotus flower represents purity, compassion and the giving of great joy to all.
The face is defined by arched eyebrows, wide open rimmed eyes and a thin aquiline, nose.
A conical three tier chignon-cover surmounts the head and is surrounded by a diadem tied in the back with a bow knot, typical of the Banteay Srei period.
This rare image of Hanuman radiates an aloofness, the quiet power of the subject and the sensuality typical of the Banteay Srei period.
