A pair of antique Chinese‑style wood temple guardian lions—also known as Imperial guardian lions, shishi lions, or “foo dogs.”
Since the lion motif entered China from India, particularly through Buddhist symbolism, guardian lion statues have stood before imperial palaces, tombs, government offices, temples, and the homes of officials and wealthy families, where they are believed to offer powerful protection and ward off harmful influences.
Each lion here is carved fully in the round, with a strong, muscular body and an elaborate coiffure. The faces are especially expressive, with full lips and almond‑shaped eyes, the pupils finely incised beneath gently arched brows to convey alert watchfulness and quiet authority.
The carving is of particularly high quality, evident in the crisp definition of the mane, features, and ornamental details; every line is clean and deliberate rather than roughly suggested. A distinctive, beautifully developed patina enriches the surface, softening the highlights and enhancing the sense of age and character.

Large and/or fragile pieces requiring palletising, specialist crating and/or extra packaging may take a little longer. Palletised shipments will be delivered curbside.
