An antique Javanese-style seated bronze Devi Tara sculpture in the 13th‑century Majapahit tradition.

In Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism, Tara is a beloved bodhisattva and goddess of compassion, swift protection and enlightened activity. Often called the “Saviouress,” she is believed to respond instantly to the cries of those in danger, guiding practitioners across the ocean of suffering with fearless compassion. In this sculpture she is seated gracefully upon a round lotus‑petal pedestal, itself raised on a square, decorated base, with her right foot extended and resting lightly on a budding lotus—an elegant pose that suggests both repose and readiness to act. In her left hand she gently holds the stem of a lotus flower that rises and blossoms beside her shoulder, symbolising purity and the unfolding of wisdom.

She is richly adorned in a finely detailed dhoti and sacred upavita cords, their jeweled textures carefully indicated in bronze. Her face, with serene downcast gaze, radiates calm introspection and compassionate presence. Tara wears an ornate Javanese‑style tiara before a tall conical kirita‑makuta crown, a form associated with royal and divine status, evoking her mastery over both positive and negative mental states and her role as a guiding, protective force. An aquiline nose, elongated earlobes with large earrings, and a delicately beaded aureole behind her head further emphasise her dignity and divinity.

The Majapahit empire, centred in East Java from the late 13th to the early 16th century, was one of Southeast Asia’s great Hindu‑Buddhist kingdoms, renowned for its sophisticated bronze and stone sculpture. Images such as this Tara reflect the refined synthesis of Indian iconography with Javanese taste: compact yet powerful forms, intricate jewellery, and a quiet, meditative strength. The sculpture is enhanced by a wonderful brown, malachite‑toned patina that softens the details and testifies to its age, giving the piece warmth and depth.

This traditional yet distinctive Majapahit‑style Tara is an evocative embodiment of compassionate energy and spiritual protection, offering a compelling focal point for any collection or sacred space.

Just wanted to let you know your handsome Cambodia bronze Buddha torso statue arrived in fine shape (well packaged) in today's mail. Thanks for shipping so very promptly. I'm very pleased with the bust... as I was with the other two pieces I ordered from you last year. The statue is quietly handsome and such a nice addition to my collection. Perfect.
