An antique Khmer style bronze Erawan or Airavata statue with Indra riding his mount.

Erawan is also known as Airaavatha or Airavata. Erawan is the mount of Indra.

Riding on Erawan is the deity Indra, the king of Tavatimsa Heaven. Indra is a guardian deity. He is the deity of the heavens, lightning, thunder, storms, rains, river flows, and war. Indra is the most referred to deity in the Rigveda.

He is celebrated for his powers, and the one who kills the great symbolic evil (malevolent type of Asura) named Vritra who obstructs human prosperity and happiness. In his hand he holds a lightning thunderbolt weapon known as Vajra.

In Khmer culture, Erawan (also called Airavata or Airawat) is the name of the three-headed elephant mount of the Hindu and Buddhist god Indra. This image is a common motif in ancient Khmer art, appearing on architectural elements like lintels and pediments, and represents strength, wisdom, and divine power, similar to its presence in Khmer and other regional mythologies.

    Erawan (Airavata)
    • A divine,  elephant from Hindu and Buddhist mythology.
    • It is the mythical mount, or vahana, of the god Indra.
    • Symbolizes strength, wisdom, and compassion.
    • In Khmer culture, it can also be seen as a symbol of the Buddha's teachings.

    Indra

    • The king of deities in Hinduism and Buddhism.
    • Associated with the sky, weather, thunder, and rain.
    • Also known as the "guardian" of the eastern direction in Angkorian temples.
    • Depicted here holding a Vajra (thunderbolt).

The Vajra (Sanskri: वज्र) or  'Thunderbolt', is a legendary and ritualistic tool, symbolizing the properties of a diamond (indestructibility) and a thunderbolt (irresistible force). It is also described as a "ritual weapon".

The sculpture provides the perfect traditional in appearance Erawan to bring serenity and timeless style to your home, office or sacred space.

To aid with safe shipping your Indra sculpture will be wood crated before shipping. There is no additional cost for this packing, crating and shipping service.

Let Us Help You Find The Piece You Desire

As a collector of bronze idols of Buddhist and Hindu origin, I was very impressed by the fine quality and patina of the Dancing Shiva I recently purchased from HD Asian Art.

I want to especially convey my thanks to James for his patience and expertise as I made my choice. I will be sure to recommend HD Asian Art to my friends and fellow collectors.

My collection welcomes the addition of this statue of Lord Nataraja. It is a good example of Khmer art and workmanship.
