Vishnu represents eternal life and sustains the universe as a whole. Hindu households will often have several Vishnu statues but can a Vishnu idol bring personal peace and prosperity into the home?
Whenever the world is at risk of evil or chaos, it is Vishnu’s duty to appear in the form of an avatar and restore balance. Given this Vishnu is a popular choice of deity to bring into the home. Though his importance is often pitted against that of Shiva, his widespread admiration is untouchable.
Many Hindus argue that without Vishnu, the universe would fall into complete disarray, which undoubtedly renders him the most powerful given the world as we know it relies on his authority.
Vishnu's preservation of the balance of good and evil and the power that comes with this are truly communicated through his various depictions, be it what he holds in his hands or the other beings with which he is shown.
As one of the most popular deities within Hinduism, and also one of the most powerful, Vishnu represents many different aspects of Hindu beliefs. He is known as the Preserver, tasked with overseeing the balance of the world and ensuring that evil is kept at bay.
With over one thousand different names, many earthly avatars, and multiple different depictions throughout the ancient texts and art, Vishnu is central to the practice of Hinduism and its history. Though interpretations of Vishnu have evolved over time, his popularity today is testament to the notion that he is an immensely powerful deity.
Part of the beauty of Hinduism is the universal acceptance of others’ opinions and the collective respect for alternative viewpoints. There is an understanding within Hinduism that their supreme God, or Para Brahman, is not only everywhere but inside everyone. The religious journey is all about discovering this absolute being within each individual’s soul, whichever God devotees ultimately find that to be.
